Magyk is a great entrance into the world of Septimus Heap, a world of magicians and magical creatures as well as ordinary people. This series has elements of Harry Potter, but enough originality to keep it fresh and engaging. Also, I think it fits the 8-10 year old age range better.
The story is exciting, but without some of the darker and violent sides found in some children's fantasy.
