Growing up, Will dreams of joining Battleschool and becoming a famous warrior for his kingdom. However, on Choosing Day, his wish is denied. He is small for his age and lacks the usual warrior skills and strength, but he does have the skills of a Ranger. He can climb, hide, and observe without being seen. Will is unsure of life as a Ranger, but when his skills are tested the most, he learns more about himself and his role in the upcoming battle facing his kingdom.
The first in a long series of Ranger's Apprentice books, The Ruins of Gorlan is perfect adventure fantasy for tween and teen readers. It would appeal to fans of Lord of the Rings, but is a little less dark and epic.
