Jackaby by William Ritter

Jackaby

Stranded far from home and low on funds, Abigail Rook must seek employment. She responds to a strange ‘help wanted’ ad which drastically changes her life and view of the world. Rather abruptly, Abigail finds herself employed as R.F. Jackaby’s detective assistant, but Jackaby is not a normal investigator. He uses his unique gift to see the supernatural to help him solve his cases. Now Abigail is facing danger and adventure as well as forces of magic and darkness she never knew existed.

This creative tale feels much like Sherlock Holmes meets Dracula. Abigail provides the Holmesian deduction while Jackaby sheds light on the supernatural forces in this alternate history. Despite the dark magic and death, this fun novel includes humor and classic mystery conventions. It is a perfect read for Sherlock lovers as well as fantasy fans and remains appropriate for a younger teen audience.
