The Thing About Jellyfish by Ali Benjamin

The Thing About Jellyfish

Suzy Swanson has stopped talking. The little girl whose parents cautioned her to stop her ‘constant talking’ has become the middle schooler who is ‘not talking.’ When her childhood friend Franny Jackson drowns, Suzy retreats from the world. Instead, she becomes obsessed with finding a reason for Franny’s death. Suzy wants a logical explanation--someone or something to blame. Maybe an answer will help her overcome her grief and her guilt over her last interaction with her friend.

With beautifully written prose, The Thing About Jellyfish spins a story peppered with scientific facts. Suzy is a narrator with a unique voice. Middle grade readers will relate with her struggles and emotions as she deals with loss and growing up. Suzy’s experience is difficult, and could be hard for some young readers. However, Suzy’s story spreads hope in the midst of struggles.
