Like a fairly normal eighth grader, Steven is obsessed with girls and playing his drums. He keeps up with school and finds his little brother Jeffrey annoying. But Steven’s world is turned upside down when Jeffrey is unexpectedly diagnosed with cancer. Now Steven is trying to keep his family together, do homework, and practice for band, while not letting anyone guess that he is falling apart.
Drums, Girls & Dangerous Pie is a powerful and real look at the strain childhood illness places on families. Steven’s experience is painful but also hopeful as he learns that asking for help is not the end of the world. I highly recommend this book for anyone dealing with a similar experience and anyone else who just wants to develop empathy.
