Starfish by Lisa Fipps

For as long as she can remember, Ellie has been bullied about her weight. She suffers teasing at school, comments in public, but worst of all, pressure at home. To survive, Ellie tries to blend in, be quiet, take up less space. But feelings are building, and if Ellie doesn’t find a way to deal with them, she’s afraid she might explode. Luckily, with some help from friends and a supportive therapist, Ellie learns what it takes to stand up for herself without lashing out.

Starfish is a beautifully written and carefully crafted book about fat-shaming. At times its truthfulness is painful, but the message is powerful and necessary. Ellie’s experience will resonate with those who have experienced bullying and create empathy in those who have not. A helpful and necessary read for tweens and teens.
