The Van Gogh Deception by Deron Hicks

A 12-year-old boy is found sitting in the National Gallery in Washington, D.C. He can’t remember why he is there or even his own name, but his mind is swirling with facts about artists and paintings. He is placed into temporary foster care with Mary Sullivan and her daughter Camille. Together, they revisit the art museum in an attempt to resurface memories. Those memories come slowly, and the boy soon realizes his life may depend on how quickly he can remember.

This action packed museum mystery is perfectly paced for middle grade readers with a thirst for adventure. The museum setting as well as interspersed QR codes featuring famous paintings will give readers a little culture along with their mystery. With an intriguing story and interesting characters, this is a fun and unique book for readers with a wide variety of interests.

Pivot Point by Kacie West

As a Searcher, Addie Coleman lives multiple lives--the future she chooses and the memories of what might have been. Her mental abilities allow her to see the future, but she can’t change it, only choose between two paths. When her parents divorce and ask her to choose where to live, Addie ‘searches’ her future. Pivot Point follows Addie's life on two different paths, but her final choice requires sacrifices she never expected.

Pivot Point is a young adult novel that includes realistic teen struggles with a hint of the paranormal thrown in. On one path, Addie faces life in a new school and an unfamiliar culture. Her other path follows life in the Compound where life revolves around people with unique mental abilities. A variety of teen readers will connect with this two sided story.

Shadow on the Mountain by Margi Preus

Norway has been invaded by Nazi Germany, but the people refuse to give in. All ages and types of people join the Resistance movement and quietly fight to keep the Nazi’s from gaining complete control. Espen starts by delivering illegal newspapers, but his responsibilities grow to more and more dangerous jobs. Based on real experiences of Norwegian Resistance workers during World War II, Shadow On the Mountain is an inspiring story of courage. It is a good introduction to the reality of World War II while remaining appropriate for younger readers. The adventures of Espen and his family focus more on resistance than violence.

Recommended ages 11 and up
